Athletics

Sports are fun and developing athletic ability helps makes boys and girls well-rounded.   The Academy offers girls’ and boys’ basketball, girls’ volleyball, co-ed soccer and co-ed track. We play against teams from other faith-based schools in Cedar Rapids and Eastern Iowa.  Most of our teams also have the opportunity to enter some tournaments in addition to regular season games.

Games:  The best players on Varsity teams are the starters. The coaches will sub throughout games as ability allows. Starters are rotated on JV, if ability allows, and the coaches will play subs throughout games. This is a general approach, depending on the number of players and their abilities.

Inter-Personal Relationships:

Player-to-player: Players are expected to be encouraging, supportive and helpful to their teammates. Athletes are part of a team, and we encourage players to talk to their teammates to resolve any issues they are having in a Christ-like manner.

Player-to-Coach: Players are expected to be respectful and supportive of their coaches. They may not always agree with the way the coach does things, but the coach is the authority and players need to cooperate with him/her. In private and very respectfully, students may ask questions about playing time or any problems.

Coach-to-Player: Coaches are expected to be encouraging and focused on developing talent. If a coach raises their voice as they instruct, this is to ensure that everyone can hear them or to emphasize a point.  It doesn’t mean that they are angry with the student! The goal is to make athletics a wonderful experience where players can grow, the team can improve, and everyone can grow in their faith in Christ.

Parent role: Parents are expected to encourage their child to practice and play hard and have a Christ-like attitude.  They are also called upon to transport children to and from practices and games, and to help out when needed (i.e. concessions).  Please understand that our coaches are volunteers; be patient and understanding with them, especially with large teams and playing time.

Expectations:  Students are expected to be at practices in order to be a part of  the team.  If you miss too many practices, this may affect your playing time.  Please schedule appointments on days other than practices or games.  Please communicate with the coaches in advance when you have to miss a practice or game.
