Shawn and Kathy Moser are a formidable parenting team to their five children. They were high school sweethearts and have been married for 15 years. A top priority for their family has been giving their children the best education possible, and that is what led them to Isaac Newton Christian Academy.
“We never dreamed we would have this big of a family!” said Kathy. “I always thought we would be a double income family with two kids, but God had a different plan for us. We truly feel blessed to have a big family and that we can provide a Christian education for them.”
Their crew includes William, 10; Evan, 9; Andrew, 6; Ella, 5; and Katelyn, 2. Kathy has a degree in Elementary Education and spent her first year teaching in an inner-city school in Chicago, followed by nine years of teaching in the Cedar Rapids Schools. Shawn has an Accounting Degree and an MBA from University of Iowa, and is an Accountant at AEGON.
“We enroll our children at the Academy because we want them to have a Christian education that has a strong academic foundation and where they can learn about God’s Word and world in a morally, spiritually and physically safe environment,” explained Shawn. “It’s very important that we can entrust our children with educators who share our same values as they educate and train our children.”
“The bottom line,” he added, “is that the Academy has the values, structure, safety, and academic excellence that were important when we made the educational decision for our children.”
A Christian education for a large family is a challenge, the Moser’s agree. “We have to make tough choices on how we want to spend our money and stick to a budget,” said Kathy. “We are willing to sacrifice and find creative ways to cut costs to make this happen,” added. Kathy. “It is well worth the effort.”
For the Moser family, the “well worth it” translates to the joys of watching their children grow academically and seeing them maturing in their walk with the Lord. “They love to share with us all the things they are learning,” said Shawn. “Our children are getting a total educational experience at the Academy with outstanding academics, but also receive training so they can grow in Christlike character. That involves wisdom and integrity, so that they can impact the world for Christ.”
Kathy believes it was a divine connection that introduced them to the Academy! She had never heard of the school but met an Isaac Newton mom at her son’s baseball game.
“At the time, I was homeschooling my two boys and we were starting to pray about other school options,” explained Kathy. “This lady started sharing with me about Isaac Newton and how great the school was. So the next day I made an appointment and got a tour of the school. Shawn and I prayed about the decision to send our kids to the Academy, and we believe it truly was an answer to our prayers.”
The Moser family attends River of Life Ministries. Shawn grew up in the Lutheran church, and Kathy grew up Catholic. “Once we started a family, our faith life became more real and important to us. We knew we needed support in raising our children, and that meant consistent teaching among home, school, and church.”
Kathy is currently on the Isaac Newton Board of Directors, serving on the Curriculum Committee and School Improvement Committee.
