Senator Grassley's Visit>
Senator Charles Grassley Visits The Academy
On Thursday, January 13, the Academy had the distinct honor of hosting a visit by U.S. Senator Charles Grassley.  The Senator and his aide Mr. Fred Schuster, were greeted by 8th graders Kari  and Mason, and then he spent some time talking about education and answering questions from the faculty. The entire junior high then had an opportunity to meet the Senator and ask questions. Former students Caleb S., now a junior at Washington High School, and Kaylie O., a senior at Kennedy, provided the welcome and introduction of the Senator. They are mentors in the JLP program, along with Sara N. (Kennedy senior), and Rebekah V. (Washington Senior), who were in attendance. JLP mentor Jonathan J., former Academy student and current Kennedy junior, gave the closing prayer.

During a question and answer period, JLP students asked the Senator a wide range of questions from why health care is so expensive (“Do you have the rest of the morning open to hear the answer?” the Senator quipped!), to how he applies his personal faith to his job. When asked if he misses having a private life and if he feels safe on his job, the Senator responded that he feels safe on his job, and was saddened by the recent shooting of an Arizona Congresswoman. He talked about the importance of elected officials being available in a variety of venues to talk to constituents, and that he would never want that to change. He did describe how thoroughly guarded the radius around the White House and Capitol are, and how difficult it would be for someone to enter into that space who was there to cause harm.

Known for his no-nonsense style of communicating, Senator Grassley had some sage advice when he discussed his philosophy of leadership. He said that to lead you also have to have followers, “so look behind you. If you don’t have followers, perhaps the direction in which you are leading is not the right one!” He also said that if you always tell the truth, you will never have to worry about what you said to which people!

Hats off to the JLP students for preparing for this event. Noah S., Mason L, and Samuel R helped set up the room. Halle R. and Hadley R., along with Grace K., made a welcome sign. Dale T., Molly F., Sandra B., and Nicole H. prepared the questions, Callie G. took photographs, and Nicole H., Cayla G., and Angelica F. contacted the media. Grace K. organized a prayer team. Other students helped with miscellaneous tasks, and got to ask the Senator a question during the program. Great job, student leaders!
