Growing in Academic Excellence
Our mission is “Developing Christlike Character and Academic Excellence.” It is a nice goal, but do we accomplish that? Students in grades 3 – 11 are tested annually using a test called the Iowa Statewide Assessment of Student Progress (ISASP) which assesses students’ progress in reading, language, writing and mathematics. Students in grades 5, 8 and 10 also complete a science assessment. Twice a year, students in grade K – 6 take a DIBELS test to measure progress in literacy skills.
Students were tested in ISASP in March 2024. Results indicated that
90% of our students in grade 3 -11 were either proficient or advanced proficient in Language Arts, and 85% were either proficient or advanced proficient in math. Of the students in grades 5, 8, and 11, 86% were proficient or advanced in science. Those numbers sound nice, but we are not content. The staff analyzes the data to impact our instruction. We disaggregate it by subject, gender, grade level, and grades over time. We determine where our areas of strength lie, and where we need to improve instruction to continue to challenge students and to provide extra support and instruction for those who are not yet proficient. Miss Schneider and Mrs. Whiting provide support to individuals and small groups. They also monitor progress throughout the year. As an instructional coach, I am in the classrooms to set goals and help with our teaching practices to deliver the best instruction for student needs. Our academic excellence continues to improve.
