Starting the School Year with Faith
While starting a new school year can be exciting and fun, it often comes with at least a minimal amount of stress. When we set our eyes on the Lord, the process is smoother, and the path is straighter. Continue reading for 5 encouraging reminders to keeping you moving in the right direction.
God Leads Us on a Straight Path
"Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight." – Proverbs 3:5–6
Parenting is full of decisions—what activities to sign them up for, how to handle school struggles, when to let them step out on their own. It’s easy to feel overwhelmed or uncertain. This verse reminds us that we don’t have to figure it all out on our own. When we pause and invite God into our parenting—big choices and daily routines alike—He promises to lead us on a straight path. Trust is not passive; it's a daily surrender and intentional seeking of God's wisdom.
God Has a Purpose for Your Child
"There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens." – Ecclesiastes 3:1
Each school year brings a new season—not just academically, but emotionally and spiritually. Some years are filled with joy and growth; others come with trials and change. But no season is wasted in God’s hands. He uses them all to shape character, deepen faith, and reveal purpose. Even seasons of difficulty—friendship struggles, learning challenges, or transitions—can be tools God uses to teach perseverance, compassion, and resilience. As a parent, your role is not to control the season, but to walk faithfully with your child through it, pointing them to God's bigger picture.
Parent with Courage and Peace
"Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go." – Joshua 1:9
It takes courage to entrust your children to a world you can’t fully protect them from. It takes peace to face uncertain days without giving in to fear. God didn’t tell Joshua to be fearless because everything would be easy—He told him to be courageous because God Himself would be present. The same is true for you. Whether your child is entering preschool or heading off to college, God goes with them. And He stays with you. His Spirit can calm your worries, fill your heart with peace, and give you wisdom for every conversation. Let His presence be your anchor.
Be a Light at Home
"You are the light of the world... Let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven." – Matthew 5:14–16
Your influence as a parent is powerful. The values your children carry into school often begin with what they observe at home. When you model patience under stress, kindness to those who frustrate you, and faith in uncertainty, you teach your children how to be a light in their world. You don’t need to have all the answers or be a perfect parent. You just need to be intentional:
Pray aloud with and for your children.
Talk about God naturally throughout the week.
Celebrate when they show character, not just achievement.
These small, consistent acts will shape their hearts and help them shine where God places them.
God Will Give You Strength
"I can do all this through him who gives me strength." – Philippians 4:13
There are moments in parenting that will leave you empty—physically, emotionally, even spiritually. Whether it's the exhaustion of juggling work and school logistics, the heartache of watching your child struggle, or the challenge of maintaining boundaries and discipline, God knows what you're facing. He promises to give you strength, not just to survive, but to lead with grace.
- His strength shows up in the small things:
- Patience when you're at your limit.
- Wisdom when you're unsure what to say.
- Comfort when you feel alone in your parenting journey.
- Lean into His power daily, not just when you're in crisis.
- Invite Him into the ordinary moments, and He will sustain you.
