A Look at our Resource Program
Developing Christlike character and academic excellence requires both high expectations and high support for students. Having high expectations but low support can cause frustration, discouragement, and failure. Having high support but low expectations can cause apathy, dependence, and underperformance. We designed our resource program to work alongside teachers and parents in providing that high support to our students. We recognize that God has created each student in His image, exactly the way He wanted; therefore each student has equal value apart from anything extrinsic (Psalm 139:13-16). With those Biblical truths in mind, we personalize our support to what each student needs.
We use a Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) which includes screening, levels of interventions, progress monitoring, and data driven decision making. We use universal screeners twice a year with all students in K-6th to measure their math and reading skills. Based on those screeners, we administer additional diagnostic assessments as needed and develop interventions. We use a variety of evidence-based interventions including co-teaching, small group instruction, one-on-one instruction, behavior plans, and accommodation plans. We also help teachers implement intervention strategies in the classroom.
For students receiving interventions, we monitor progress to ensure that our interventions are successful. We prioritize early intervention, so many of our students only need additional support for a year or two. Almost half of elementary students who needed small-group intervention for math last school year did not need that intervention this year. Through the whole process, we use data to make decisions because we want our support to match the students’ needs. By addressing students according to their specific needs we are able to coach them in academic excellence in a way that makes sense for them.
